In the text Peter mentions Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop is the graphics industry standard for photo-manipulation and has tremendous power but is expensive. If you are thinking of buying a scanner look at what software comes with it as some come with a limited edition of Photoshop.
It may be possible to upgrade to the full edition if you feel adventuresome - but be prepared to go to college to learn how to use it!
