Display of goods locomotives at Telford Nick Dunhill

15 March 2013
The Technical Committee will host a display of goods locomotives, from any railway company or period, on the competition stand on Sunday 8th September 2013 between 10.30 and 15.30. Would anyone wishing to display their model please contact Nick Dunhill by email or phone 07784837161.

Models can be dropped off and picked up at any time during the Sunday of Guildex 2013. A receipt will be issued by the Display Steward which must be presented when collecting the model.

Models whose details are received by 7th August 2012 will be covered by the Guild’s insurance scheme while on the stand. Models whose details are received after this date can be displayed but at the owner’s risk. The display stand will however be stewarded all day.

Product directory released John Birch

25 April 2013
Introducing the Guild on line product directory

After several months effort by a team of 10, we have now launched the Guild on line product directory. Longer term members will remember that a print version of such a directory was produced in the mid 1980s but we have had nothing similar for many years.

There is a steady flow of enquiries on the Guild’s website forum, and on other 0 gauge internet discussion groups, where modellers are looking for particular products, from complete kits to small and sometimes very specific items. We hope this will help.

You can access the directory under the traders menu.

This is a directory rather than a catalogue. The intention is to steer you towards the suppliers who are providing what you are after. There will be a link in the result table which will take you to the website of the supplier of each item where you should be able to find further detail. As not all suppliers have websites it may be necessary to contact the supplier to follow up your enquiry, but we hope that both you, as customers, and the suppliers will benefit from better knowledge of what is available in our scale.

To date we have managed to put over 15,000 items into the database and you can now search it in a number of ways depending on what you are looking for. There is a help page on the website to give you detailed hints and tips, but here is an outline of what we have done.

The products for over 100 (so far) different suppliers have been listed and categorised. You will be able to search these by the following criteria

1. The originating company. This will most likely be a railway company but in the case of certain items it may be a manufacturer. For more general items this criterion is not specified.

2. A product type (such as locomotives, coaches, wagons etc, but also railway infrastructure, scenic items, and more generic items like electrical items)

3. Within these product types there are categories and sub categories. There is a structure chart linked to the help page.

4. Diagram numbers. Not always relevant or available but many suppliers quote the diagram number they have worked from for their product. This may well be a very quick of finding what you are after.

In addition you will be able to search for a specific word or words in the description of the product. If you want a Wakefield mechanical lubricator for instance, just put “Wakefield” in the text box and you should get a reasonable selection. At the time of writing there were 17 returns to that particular search. We are dependent on the descriptions provided by the suppliers of course, which vary considerably in the detail given, so you may have be a bit crafty in your searches to locate what you are after.

We know there are a number of suppliers we have yet to include and we hope they will soon be able to provide us with their product list for inclusion. Suppliers can enter items themselves and we hope they will keep their lists up to date (and correct our mistakes).

And finally.........you can help.

On the search page there is a User Feedback button which links to an on line form which you can use to tell us about anything that you may know which will help us improve the information. This may be a missing trader, a missing item, an incorrectly categorised item, or an incorrectly described item. Please also feel free to tell us your ideas on how we can improve this – I’m sure we haven’t thought of everything. We will have a small team who will respond to these messages and will follow them up and make the relevant corrections or additions. Keeping the listing up to date will be no mean task and many hands really will make light work. If you would like to be part of the directory maintenance team , please email John Birch.

When the Guild was formed in 1956 its primary aim was to secure the future of 0 gauge, both by bringing 0 gauge modellers together and by encouraging the trade to continue to supply goods in our scale. The fact that we need an on line database to find things now suggest the trade has responded magnificently. Long may it continue.

Happy searching – I think you might be surprised just what a treasure trove is out there for us.

A note for users of Internet Explorer 10

If you use IE10 with Windows 7 it appears that you cannot move between pages in the results grid. We are looking for a solution to this Microsoft inspired gremlin. However we understand you can get round it by switching IE10 into compatibility mode. This can be found under the "Tools" menu.

Borders MRC is combining forces with the Oswestry Station Trust and the
Cambrian Heritage Railway to put on a combined model railway show and diesel
operation at Oswestry and Llynclys.

The date is Sunday 21st July 2013.
We plan to have 16 Mixed Gauges layouts inside the Cambrian Railway station building on
the ground floor and the upper floor. With Lift access.
Traders will be both inside the building and in the entrance..
The CHR will be running diesel hauled brake van rides at Oswestry as part of the combined ticket price.
The adjacent Oswestry railway museum entry will also be included in the admission ticket price. Plenty of parking
nearby

The DMU will also be in action, giving rides at near by Llynclys.
Other attractions are also in the planning stage.

Its a good opportunity to raise the profile of both Borders MRC, and of the Cambrian Rly. Come along and view the restored station and see the rolling stock under and awaiting restoration. Lots of progress made and still more to do. See the plans for linking the station to the main line at nearby
Gobowen. The track is still in position, and permissions are currently being sought.
More information on the Show as it becomes finalised, but please do put the
date in the diary.

Oswestry Station is in Oswald Rd, Oswestry, at SY11 1RE.
